Donor Relations Manager – Major/Legacy Gifts
Highly energetic and positive professional with a track record of building donor relationships and closing gifts in a team environment under the Chief Impact Officer. Will adhere to the highest ethical standards, demonstrate empathetic disposition and perseverance, and respect for neighbors in need whom we serve. This individual collaboratively manages the identification, creative engagement and cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of donors.
The incumbent should demonstrate passion for social services, have a proven record of soliciting and securing major gifts, provide outstanding customer service, see fundraising a collaborative rather than competitive environment, and be able to build relationships with internal and external customers. The Donor Relations Manager – Major/Legacy Gifts must demonstrate an active commitment to the Hawaii Foodbank mission in all aspects of daily work.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLIITIES include the following:
- Manage and grow the major gifts/planned gifts program, oversee donor services department, and establishing overall objectives and goals.
- Execute comprehensive donor-centric solicitation plan for Hawaii Foodbank’s major gifts and planned giving programs.
- Manage and grow a portfolio of major and planned gift prospects, including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship with the goal of building enduring relationships that lead to financial support and membership in major donor and planned giving programs on Oahu and Kauai.
- Prepare development proposals and present fundraising priorities to prospects for deferred and outright gifts.
- Coordinate activities with potential prospects with prospect’s attorney and/or financial advisor to determine the most appropriate method of deferred giving and to ensure arrangements for collections of gifts.
- Foster the growth of best practices in the fund development areas of major gifts and planned giving.
- Track donors and prospect progress through Raiser’s Edge, creating regular reports to chart progress on program goals.
- Develop marketing strategies, including annual fund appeals, group presentations, and peer-to-peer education.
- Cultivate and solicit prospective donors in concert with HFB’s internal and volunteer leadership through personal solicitations, one-on-one visitations, donor cultivation, event planning, and recognition events.
- Serve as an institutional resource for complex charitable planning options, both in the areas of major gifts and planned gifts.
- Oversee and manage current planned giving portfolio, which includes charitable remainder trusts, charitable gift annuities, bequests, and life estates. This includes outreach to current donors and coordinator with any outside third party administrator.
- Stewardship of donors who have already announced a commitment to planned giving.
- Create involvement opportunities for major gifts donors, such as site visits, volunteer events, annual luncheons, special events, and recognition celebrations.
- Develop and implement strategic initiatives to grow the John White Legacy fund.
- Coordinated deferred giving with HFB administration and legal counsel, if applicable, to ensure compliance with governmental regulations and HFB investment policies.
- Acquires working knowledge of HFB mission, programs, and Hunger in Hawaii statistics to create impactful and persuasive communication.
- Creation and preparation of content, including testimonials related to major and planned giving for solicitation materials, newsletters, website content, etc.
- Prepare reports and program assessment, including measurable targets for major/planned gifts, number of personal visits, stewardship activities and solicitations made, as well as new commitments and dollars raised.
OTHER TEAM RESPONSIBLITY FUNCTIONS
Assist with, direct, and manage, as assigned, other development activities, such as special events, annual food drive, food drive coalition, food drive collection site, operation activities, etc.

Demonstrated ability to identify, qualify, solicit, and close major and planned gifts. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Working evenings, holiday, special events, project work, and weekend hours, as needed.
Provide guidance to team members and assist with problem resolution. Provide supervision and mentorship to assigned staff. Minimum 3 – 5 years management/supervisory experience required.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or 5 – 7 years fundraising experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 3 – 5 years major gifts fundraising and planned giving experience.
