Position Description – Executive Vice President

 

The Honolulu Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Honolulu) is seeking a highly motivated, visionary and transformative leader for the position of Executive Vice President (EVP). The EVP is the chief executive and administrative officer of the AIA Honolulu Chapter and a member of the Chapter’s Executive Committee.  The EVP is responsible for the strategic vision, planning, leadership and accountability by working closely with the Executive Committee, Hawaii State Council Board, AIA members and internal staff.  In close collaboration with the Executive Committee, the EVP establishes and implements long-range strategic planning goals, oversight of finances, strategies, plans, and policies. The position has full responsibility and authority for the chapter’s day-to-day operations, staff and personnel matters, as well as oversight and ongoing development of chapter programming, events and public relations. The EVP collaborates with the Executive Committee, Board of Directors, AIA Members and Staff and performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.  

 

The position recommends and implements new operational and public policies while refining existing policies as approved by the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors.  The EVP plans, organizes, directs and coordinates staff on programs and activities of the Chapter to ensure its goals and objectives are being achieved and member needs are being satisfied.  The EVP establishes and maintains key internal and external relationships, and endeavors to maintain consistency and continuity of AIA core member services, the annual operating plan and budget.  Further, through effective management, leadership development, mentorship and proactive planning—the EVP works to ensure feasibly responsible and dynamic performance outcomes; and to foster continual, positive growth of the AIA Honolulu Chapter, its member firms and members.

 

The EVP scope includes the management and administrative operations of the Center for Architecture (CFA/Center).  The Center was established through an initiative of AIA Honolulu to significantly elevate public awareness of architecture and design.  The Center for Architecture is also intended as a gathering space for AIA member architects to engage with professionally allied members, industry partners and the public—for collaborative learning events, public forums, meetings, receptions and brainstorming sessions to elevate the role of design in shaping our communities.  By leveraging this new and inviting space, AIA Honolulu hopes to continue to develop additional signature activities and programs that encourage public discourse about architecture and its role in creating healthy, livable communities.

 

Additionally, the EVP position is responsible for the management and administrative services contract between the AIA Honolulu Chapter and AIA Hawaii State Council (HSC).  The HSC is a separate entity representing AIA members in Hawaii on governmental, regulatory and legislative matters of state-wide interest to the profession of architecture. The EVP is responsible for working directly with the Hawaii Architectural Foundation, a 501(c)3, on programs and events that further the understanding and value of architecture throughout Hawaii. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  •        Must have proven experience as an executive manager in a professional association, business or similar experience in board development, organizational leadership and/or the creation of member value. 
  •       Leadership style aligned with the organizations culture and values.
  •       College degree in business, marketing or related field.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  •         Philanthropy/Fundraising experience
  •         Proven track record in working with volunteers or committees in implementing decisions, programs   and directing volunteers in a consistent manner within organizational policies.
  •         Local Presence-respected in the business community with a network of contacts and connections.
  •         Government Affairs, Advocacy and or Public Relations a plus. 
  •         Graphic Design Skills a plus.

 

Other Requirements:

Hours:  Full-time, exempt.  Irregular hours required as needed.  This position frequently requires evening availability for meeting and/or events (~1-2 times/week). Occasional weekends are required.
Travel:  Mainland travel required (approximately 4 times/year)
Evaluation:  Annual performance review by AIA Honolulu President and Executive Committee.

Provides leadership and motivation and is accountable for resources and support.  Ability to track progress through systems and demonstrated results.  Ability to meet organizational goals and members expectations. 

Business Acumen: Ability to manage human, financial, and information resources strategically.  Anticipates and develops the technical/functional capabilities needed to build competitive advantages. Fosters a broad-based, continuous process improvement environment with a clear focus on delivering value to all Members. Able to generate financial statements and develop key performance measures, and understand how their decisions will impact value creation.  Maintains awareness and understanding of the external business environment. Demonstrates ability to analyze and synthesize market and competitive data to advance the organization's goals and mission.

Communications: Manages flow and frequency of communication.  Fosters a trusted and safe environment for idea-sharing and honest feedback. Shares relevant information in a concise and timely manner and aligns vision and values when communicating.  Communicates transparently and inclusively. Makes clear and convincing oral presentations. Listens effectively.  Clarifies information as needed. Highly communicative with team, members and Board.  Presents and writes effectively. Is ethical, diplomatic and tactful in all interpersonal communications.   

Community Relations: Develops and effectively uses networks and relationships inside and outside the organization. Represents and communicates the interests of organization with the community and stakeholders. 

Customer/Member Orientation: Responds to needs and expectations of diverse member base; understands and appreciates the art and science of building and design, as well as developing high quality profession-oriented information and sought-after member resources.
